The Rangers


Virunga National Park currently has about 250 rangers

Twelve are members of the Congo Hound Canine Unit or Section Canine. The Congo Hound Unit is consisting of five dog handlers and seven members of the defense unit who are responsible for the safety of the team

Christian Shamavu is the Head of the Section Canine as well as a doghandler. He is the oldest and most experienced of this group.


The other dog handlers are: Gracien Sivanza, Sedrick Babinta, David Nezehose, Jean Claude Mustari.

Those Rangers, who are part of the Defense Unit participate in all activities and responsible not only for the safety of the dogs and handlers but also actively help with training
